Comprehensive System of Personnel Development
Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), each state and
jurisdictions' early intervention program must provide a
system to recruit, retain, and provide professional development
for the service providers in the system.
The District of Columbia's Early Intervention Program, Division of Special Education,
in the Office of State Superintendent of Education is responsible
for early intervention system in the District of Columbia.

June is an exciting month for our CSPD training offerings. See below for
information about our UCEDD annual conference focusing on early intervention
and our June 19th workshop on early intervention in the natural environment
with our special guest speaker Phillipa Campbell!

Part C of IDEA was implemented in 1986. The Annual GUCCHD
Conference, through a variety of formats will discuss the
population served, the evidence supporting EI services,
and discuss future needs of children, families, providers,

Implementing Early Intervention within the
Natural Environment
Contemporary practice models that emphasize the critical
role of families as teachers of their children and practitioners
as facilitators and teachers of both families and their
children, the use of common activities and routines as
contexts for children’s
learning, and the need for practice and repetition in order
for learning to occur. Dr. Campbell will describe service
provision models, specific to EI, that embed these factors and are
provided within the natural environment.

ADOS 2nd Edition
Presented by certified trainer, Donald Oswald, this session will be the first
in a series of training sessions in the use of the ADOS, 2nd
Edition and the tools for testing toddlers. A session to ensure proper scoring
is also included.

Collaborating with Infant/Toddler Serving Agencies to Build
the Capacity of Infants and Families
Children who receive EI services are often involved with
a variety of health, developmental, educational, and social service
networks. A panel of local child serving agencies will discuss their
role, eligibility criteria, expectations, and organization promoting
a collaborative relationship with EI providers.

Infant Mental Health and Maternal Depression
Increasingly, the needs of infants and toddlers for positive social and emotional
health are becoming recognized as a critical component of school readiness
and overall well-being. This session increased the awareness of EI providers
of the MH needs of young children and the impact maternal depression has
on healthy social and emotional development.

orientation and a certificate training for the P.L.A.Y
(Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters) Project for
