Disabilities
Studies Program Announced
Georgetown University, School of Continuing Education in collaboration
with the Center for Child and Human Development now offers a
Masters Degree and Advanced Certificate Program in Disability
Studies.
The program has three tracks: Developmental Disabilities, Early
Intervention, and Mental Health System of Care for Children and
Youth. The program will be on-line and classroom based. Classes
begin this fall, potential students are urged to sign up soon. Click

Annual Conference
Our Annual Conference is right around the corner. Save April
12, 2010 for Providing Quality Healthcare for Individuals
with Intellectual & Developmental
Disabilities. The conference will be held at Howard
University's Blackburn Center. Click

Framing
Disabilities: The Influence of the Media
This lively and timely symposium explored issues
related to the representation of persons
with disabilities in the media and how this representation
influences the
public’s attitudes. Speakers included individuals with
disabilities, journalist and family members Judy Woodruff
and Leon Dash, and a diverse group of faculty from Georgetown
University
and other area universities. Click

Congratulations Dr. Long

Congratulations
to Dr.Toby Long who received the prestigious
Catherine Worthingham Fellow Award from the American Physical
Therapy Association (APTA). She
was honored during an awards ceremony at PT 2009: APTA’s
Annual Conference and Exhibition, held in Baltimore, MD in
June.
Dr. Long is an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics
at Georgetown University, training director for
the Center for Child and Human Development at the Georgetown
University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities,
and the
training director for the DC LEND at Children’s
National Medical Center.
Among many honors and recognitions, Dr. Long is the recipient
of the Fulbright Senior
Specialist Award, the APTA Lucy Blair Service Award, the
APTA Section on Pediatrics’
G.E. “Bud” DeHaven Award, the Jeanne Fisher Distinguished
Mentorship Award, and
Georgetown University’s Vicennal Award.
The Catherine Worthingham Fellows of the Association recognizes
those persons whose
work has resulted in lasting and significant advances in
the science, education, and
practice of the profession of physical therapy. The Catherine
Worthingham Fellowship is
the highest honored bestowed upon physical therapists by
the Association. Long joins a
highly selective group of physical therapists, currently
only 125 therapists have been
honored as Catherine Worthingham Fellows.
