Activity and Sport for People with Disabilities: Symposium
and Strategic Planning
The Athletic Equity Symposium held in June 2011 brought together
diverse academic, administrative, organization, and education experts as well
as advocates and athletes with disabilities to discuss policy issues and changes
that can be made at the national, state and local levels to ensure full participation
of children, youth and young adults in sports and physical activity. A strategic
plan was created to accomplishing the goal of full participation in sports and

Transition
The Georgetown University Center for Excellence in Developmental
Disabilities Consumer Advisory Council Created a document on
the state of transition for youth and young adults for individuals

The Influence of the Media
This lively and timely symposium explored issues related to the representation
of persons
with disabilities in the media and how this representation influences the
public’s attitudes. Speakers included individuals with disabilities, journalist
and family members Judy Woodruff and Leon Dash, and a diverse group of faculty
from Georgetown University and other area universities. Click

Individuals with disabilities are interested in attaining and maintaining a healthy
lifestyle. Participating in physical exercise and activity, maintaining good
nutrition, managing stress, and creating social supports are important to promote

and wellness. Finding appropriate activity, wellness, and health promotion information
that pertains to their unique needs can be challenging for individuals with disabilities,
their families, and service providers. This document health and wellness information

National Center for Cultural Competence Policy Brief:
Cultural and Linguistic Competence in Family Supports
This Web document addresses the issues of cultural and linguistic competence
in providing family supports to children and youth with special health care needs

Beyond
Forest Haven
The District of Columbia was one of the first jurisdictions
in the country to close its institution for people with intellectual
and developmental disabilities. This DVD and companion study
guide look back at the history of the closing of Forest Haven
and the journey to build a better life in the community for

Consortium for Children and Youth with Disabilities and Special

Care Needs was
a multi-center research effort that included the Georgetown
University Center for Child and Human Development, the Heller
School at Brandeis University, the Institute for Child and
Health Policy at the University of Florida and Family Voices. Although
the Consortium is no longer active, many of the products
and publications they produced are good resources for families
and providers.
